Bypass Diode

Bypass diodes are located inside the junction box of a PV module.

What does bypass diode mean?

A solar bypass diode is a protective electronic component wired in parallel across sections of a solar panel. It acts as an electrical detour, allowing current to flow around shaded or damaged solar cells.

Why do bypass diodes matter in a solar project?

Bypass diodes prevent the Christmas light effect, where one module may bring down the production of the rest of the modules. When a cell is shaded, the diode activates and "turns off" about a third of the module, allowing current to flow around it. By contrast, an optimizer dynamically manages voltage and current for the individual panel so unshaded parts keep generating power, extracting the maximum energy across an entire array.
