Introducing Energy Storage Solutions

Energy Storage Solutions is an incentive program designed to help Eversource and United Illuminating customers install battery energy storage for their home. Installing a battery in your home can help you be prepared when extreme weather events are on the horizon. Batteries can provide backup power when the electricity goes out to keep your lights and small appliances running without the need to run an onsite generator. Plus, batteries work even better when you add them to an existing solar PV system or pair them with a new one, allowing batteries to recharge with the sun's energy.

Battery Benefits

  • Cleaner / Quieter: Unlike generators that run on fossil fuels, batteries are a cleaner, quieter option for powering your home during an outage.
  • Resilient: With batteries, you?re always ready for a storm without needing to buy or store fossil fuels. Keep your lights on and your refrigerator running without the stress and hassle.
  • Affordable: With Energy Storage Solutions, it?s more affordable than ever to purchase a battery system. Upfront and performance-based incentives allow you to save money at the time of purchase and over the life of your system. Residential customers could receive up to $16,000 upfront per installation with additional incentives as your system contributes to the utility grid.

Cleaner, Quieter Energy Security for your Home

Installing a battery in your home can help be more prepared when storms are on the horizon. Batteries provide backup power when the grid goes down to keep your lights on and essential appliances like your fridge running.

Unlike generators that run on fossil fuels, batteries are a cleaner, quieter option for powering your home during an outage.

Plus, batteries work even better when you add them to an existing solar PV system or pair them with a new one, allowing batteries to recharge with the sun’s energy. Also, through Renewable Energy Solutions, you can sell the power you generate with your residential solar installation to Eversource or UI.

By enrolling your Tigo GO Optimized Energy Storage System (ESS), you contribute clean, renewable energy to support electric utilities during periods of high demand, earning substantial compensation in return

The Tigo Advantage

The Tigo GO Optimized ESS with the GO Battery is engineered for seamless, efficient participation in performance-based programs like ConnectedSolutions.

  • Modular & Scalable: The Tigo GO Battery offers modular capacity in 5 kWh increments, allowing systems to scale up to 30 kWh,, ensuring you have the right capacity to maximize both home backup and program participation.
  • Optimal Efficiency: The system utilizes a DC-coupled battery configuration, which is 5% more efficient than AC-coupled designs, ensuring you get the most usable energy from every charge and discharge cycle.
  • Unmatched Control: The entire Tigo GO ESS solution is managed under the Tigo Energy Intelligence (EI) platform. This integrated platform allows you to monitor performance and securely connect your Tigo home battery to utility programs, contributing energy bursts when the grid requires it most.

How it Works
  1. Select an Eligible Contractor to install Eligible Equipment at your home. We recommend getting a few quotes before making a decision and ensure you express your interest in participating in the Energy Storage Solutions program.
  2. After your Eligible Contractor installs your battery, on summer days, and when the grid is stressed, the utility will dispatch energy from your battery to help reduce peak electricity demand. If a storm is on the horizon, the utility will not dispatch energy from your battery.
  3. Participating customers receive an upfront incentive to reduce the battery’s cost. Additionally, performance-based incentives are paid at the end of each summer and winter season based on average energy contributions to the grid.

Stay in Control and Ensure Backup Power

You remain in control of your battery system at all times.

Participation is 100% optional. While participation in all events maximizes earnings, you can opt out of any individual event with no penalty using the Tigo EI App or by notifying your aggregator.

To preserve your energy supply for grid outages, you can adjust your Battery Discharge Limit within the Tigo EI App. It is recommended to set this limit to 20% or less to maximize incentive earnings while preserving battery energy for potential power outages. Furthermore, utilities typically advise that they will not call demand response events before or during major storms that could cause widespread outages.

Steps to enroll

If you have a Tigo GO Optimized ESS installed, you can enroll now:

  1. Open the Tigo Energy Intelligence app or website.
  2. Tap on your system to view details.
  3. Go to the Settings menu and select "Battery Incentive Program".
  4. Select the relevant program, review the details, and tap "Enroll".
  5. Enter your required information and tap "Submit".

You will be notified once your enrollment is approved by the utility.

FAQs

Below are most frequently asked questions about this program.

What is Energy Storage Solutions?

Eligible customers must have a UI or Eversource electric service account located in Connecticut. In addition, the battery energy storage system must be at the same location as the electric service account location. Residential, commercial and industrial buildings must be connected to the grid by agreement with Eversource or UI and the battery must be new to the customer (systems installed prior to January 1, 2022, are not eligible for the upfront incentive but may apply to participate in the active dispatch portion of Energy Storage Solutions). Specific customer classes, such as low income, underserved and grid edge customers, are encouraged to learn more about the program as PURA has prioritized delivering increased incentives and greater resilience to these customers.

Who is eligible for this program?

Energy Storage Solutions offers an upfront incentive administered by the Connecticut Green Bank and a performance-based incentive structure managed by Eversource and UI. The upfront incentive requires eligible storage systems to automatically store and dispatch power during passive dispatch periods (the batteries will charge, and discharge as needed by the grid). The performance-based incentive compensates participants for battery energy dispatched over the summer and winter dispatch seasons.

What incentives does the program provide?

Energy Storage Solutions offers an upfront incentive administered by the Connecticut Green Bank and a performance-based incentive structure managed by Eversource and UI. The upfront incentive requires eligible storage systems to automatically store and dispatch power during passive dispatch periods (the batteries will charge, and discharge as needed by the grid). The performance-based incentive compensates participants for battery energy dispatched over the summer and winter dispatch seasons.

What is the difference between passive and active dispatch?

Passive dispatch will discharge up to 80% of your battery automatically during the season, on non-holiday weekdays in June, July and August from 3PM to 8PM. You are required to opt-in to passive dispatch to receive the up-front incentives on your home battery. Active dispatch events can also be called during the summer, but you will have the option to opt in or decline to have your battery discharged. On days when Eversource or UI calls an active dispatch event, passive dispatch will be canceled so your battery will be called on to contribute to the grid no more than once per day.

How do I get started?

If you already have solar on your home, we suggest you contact the company that installed that system to discuss adding batteries. If you don’t have solar, or just want to compare options, you can consult our list of eligible contractors to begin the conversation, or reach out to the Green Bank or your local utility provider. You can find our list of eligible contractors on our webpage here.
